In a stark departure from the first game’s carefully crafted, linear levels, Shadow Warrior 2 plays more like a Borderlands title, with enemies exploding into a shower of money, upgrades and ammo in addition to all the blood and guts. All of this can be done alone or with up to three friends in cooperative, though I played solo. Their efforts to get Kamiko back into her body set the stage for the rest of the game, which has Wang traveling to several locations via Kamiko’s teleporting abilities to do main and side missions for various colorful NPC quest givers, returning every so often to the game’s hub area to turn in quests, obtain new ones and buy and sell loot and ammo. Circumstances conspire to once again put someone’s soul inside his head, a young woman named Kamiko, Zilla’s top scientist. Lo Wang finds himself working as a mercenary, this time for the Yakuza retrieving a demonic artifact. Zilla Enterprises, the sinister corporation for which protagonist Lo Wang used to work, now has an even greater monopoly on every industry, with Zilla himself profiting greatly in money and power as a result of the crossover of dimensions. The remake was a bit of a cult hit, and quite a pleasant surprise for me when I picked it up on a whim during a gaming drought. It’s not exactly a revolutionary new take on FPS action, but it sticks to the basics and is damn good at providing a healthy mix of carnage and chuckles.Shadow Warrior 2 is the sequel to 2013’s Shadow Warrior, itself a remake of a 1997 FPS from the same team behind Duke Nukem 3D. If you have a few spare bucks, grab Shadow Warrior 2 to get a feel for the game. That’s just part of the arsenal that Wang will be able to play around with, ahead of Shadow Warrior 3’s release later this year on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. It’s a sword, it’s sharp, it prety much speaks for itself. Also hailing from the last Shadow Warrior game, it slices, dices, and is very nice…s. Lastly, another old favourite is back in the form of the Dragontail sword. Originally seen in Shadow Warrior 2, this pair of pay ‘n spray weapons can be upgraded to fire off paralyzing shock rounds.

The Sidekicks are a pair of SMGs that are giving me Blood 2: The Chosen flashbacks. HOT! There’s even the Poppin’ Heads upgrade, which makes craniums explode with a sickeningly satisfying gooey sound.

You can take your sweet time lining up headshots, fan the hammer to empty the chamber, and its unique upgrade turns its ammo into incendiary rounds. Next is the Outlaw, a good old-fashioned hand cannon that looks like it should be on display in the NRA version of the Louvre. Its Sucker Punch upgrade allows for ammo to gain homing properties and zone in on the nearest enemy. Imagine if a crossbow chucked explosive tennis balls and you’d get the idea. The Crimson Bull is pure art, a rifle that lobs explosive balls of ultra-death at enemies using tension mechanics that give it the look of a Michael Bay-designed ox. I am very much liking what I’m seeing here.
